Power & Energy (Renewable And Non Renewable)
India's Power and Energy sector is one of the most diversified in the world, comprising both conventional (non-renewable) and non-conventional (renewable) sources. The country is the world's third-largest producer and consumer of electricity, with a rapidly growing appetite for clean energy to power its economic expansion while addressing climate commitments.
Non-Renewable Sources
- Coal: India has the world's 4th largest coal reserves. Coal-fired thermal power plants remain the backbone of India's electricity generation, contributing over 50% of total installed capacity.
- Oil and Natural Gas: India has oil and natural gas reserves in areas like Bombay High, Krishna-Godavari basin, and Assam. The country is one of the world's largest importers of crude oil, with a growing emphasis on strategic petroleum reserves and domestic exploration.
- Nuclear Power: India has 22 operational nuclear reactors generating about 2% of the country's electricity. The Department of Atomic Energy continues to expand nuclear capacity as part of the low-carbon energy mix.
Renewable Sources
- Solar Energy: India is among the top three solar power producers globally. Programs like the National Solar Mission and PM-KUSUM have scaled solar capacity dramatically, with ambitious targets for 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.
- Wind Energy: India is the 4th largest wind power producer in the world, with major installations in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
- Hydroelectric Power: Major rivers and dams support large and small hydropower projects, contributing significantly to India's renewable portfolio.
- Bio-energy: Biomass, biogas, and waste-to-energy initiatives are expanding, especially in rural areas, supporting both energy access and agricultural livelihoods.
- Green Hydrogen: The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export.
Government Initiatives
- Saubhagya Scheme: Universal household electrification program.
- UJALA Scheme: LED-based energy efficiency distribution program.
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI): PLI schemes for solar modules and advanced chemistry cells are catalyzing domestic manufacturing.
- International Solar Alliance (ISA): India-led global coalition to promote solar energy.
