Natural Resources (Water, Minerals And Bio Products)
India possesses significant natural resources, including diverse water sources like major rivers and groundwater, abundant minerals such as iron ore, coal, bauxite, and mica, and rich bio-products from its extensive forests and agricultural land. These are crucial for its economy and sustainable development. The country's vast geography and climate support a wide variety of these resources, though the rapid population growth has led to their overconsumption.
Water Resources
India has a large and complex water resource base, managed primarily by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Water is essential for irrigation, power generation, and numerous other developmental activities.
Surface water
- River systems: Major rivers include the Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus, Godavari, Krishna, and Mahanadi. These rivers provide water for drinking, agriculture, power generation, and navigation.
- Central Water Commission (CWC): The CWC, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, is responsible for the overall control, conservation, and utilization of the country's water resources. It manages functions such as flood forecasting, dam safety, and monitoring of water projects.
Groundwater
- Central Ground Water Board (CGWB): The CGWB, also under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, is the primary body for the scientific management, exploration, and monitoring of groundwater.
- Resource assessment: The CGWB provides scientific inputs for the management of groundwater resources. However, groundwater levels are declining in many parts of India due to over-extraction for agriculture and urban use.
Government initiatives
- Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain: This national campaign focuses on rainwater harvesting, watershed development, and intensifying afforestation to conserve water.
- Namami Gange Programme: This project, launched by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to clean and rejuvenate the river Ganges and its tributaries.
- Jal Jeevan Mission: This initiative ensures tap water connections to all rural households in India.
Mineral resources
India is well-endowed with a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources. The Ministry of Mines is responsible for the survey, exploration, and administration of most minerals.
Metallic minerals
- Iron ore: India holds the world's 7th largest iron ore reserves and is the 4th largest exporter. Hematite and magnetite are found in states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka.
- Bauxite: India has substantial bauxite reserves and is a major producer of aluminium. Odisha is the largest producing state.
- Chromite: India is the 4th largest producer of chromite globally, with most deposits in Odisha.
- Manganese: Significant reserves of manganese ore are found in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
- Gold: The Hutti Gold Mine in Karnataka is the only significant gold producer in India.
- Lithium: In 2023, the Geological Survey of India found 5.9 million metric tonnes of lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir.
Non-metallic minerals
- Limestone: India is a major producer of limestone, found in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
- Mica: India has extensive mica reserves.
- Fossil fuels: India has the world's 4th largest coal reserves. Besides coal, India has oil and natural gas reserves, particularly in areas like Bombay High, which contribute to meeting energy demands.
Bio-Products
India's vast forest cover and agricultural biodiversity provide a rich base for bio-products including medicinal plants, biomass, biofuels, and value-added agricultural derivatives. The country is committed to sustainable management of these resources through research, policy frameworks, and community-based initiatives to balance economic development with ecological conservation.
