Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
- Role in the Economy: MSMEs are a cornerstone of the Indian economy, contributing significantly to manufacturing output, exports, and the overall GDP. They play a vital role in spreading entrepreneurial culture and are a significant employer.
- Support Systems: The Ministry of MSME provides various schemes and programs to support MSMEs, including the Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Programme (ESDP) to nurture young entrepreneurs and promote self-employment.
- Legal Framework: The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMED) Act, 2006 provides the legal definition for MSMEs and outlines their classification based on investment and turnover in plant & machinery.
Startup India Initiative
- Focus on Innovation: Startup India aims to build a strong ecosystem for startups that are focused on innovation, improvement of products/services, scalability, and potential for employment generation.
- Government Support: Key initiatives under Startup India include:
- Startup India Action Plan (2016): Launched to promote ease of doing business for startups.
- Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS): Provides early-stage capital to startups.
- Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS): A government-established fund to support startups.
- Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS): Offers credit guarantees for loans to eligible startups.
- Registration: Startups can register as private limited companies, partnership firms, or LLPs and must meet criteria for innovation and potential growth to be recognized under the Startup India initiative.
